Texas Senate Race: Talarico’s “Texas Roots” Fueled by Coastal Cash, Not Texans
Texas Democratic Senate nominee James Talarico is touting his Texas roots, but campaign finance records reveal a significant portion of his funding comes from outside the state. During the final stretch of the first quarter of 2026, roughly 50% of Talarico’s campaign funds originated from donors in states other than Texas, a stark contrast to his Republican opponent. Talarico raised approximately $4 million from out-of-state sources between February 12 and March 31 out of a total of $8.5 million, according to Fox News Digital’s review of campaign finance records. This period saw a notable increase in donations attributed to his rising national profile. In comparison, his Republican opponent, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, raised only about 25% of his cash from out-of-state donors, bringing in roughly $850,000 during the same timeframe, with most of it originating from within Texas.
This fundraising disparity highlights the increasing nationalization of the Texas Senate race. While Talarico campaigns on his Texas heritage and opposition to “outside special interests,” his campaign is heavily financed by Democratic donors and executives from across the country. This financial advantage for Democrats positions the race as one of the most competitive this cycle. However, it also provides Republicans with an opportunity to frame Talarico’s campaign as being propelled by “coastal liberal donors” rather than the genuine support of Texas voters. Notably, donors from New York and California alone contributed over $1.3 million to Talarico’s campaign in the last six weeks of the first quarter, as per Federal Election Commission records.
