Democrats Weaponize Racism Claims Against All-White Jury in Karmelo Anthony Case
Supporters of Anthony contend he acted in self-defense, arguing the trial was unfair. Some activists and Democratic lawmakers are calling for a review and appeal. Rep. Troy Carter, D-La., expressed sympathy, stating, “Here is a case where a young man certainly appears to have been being attacked and defended himself.” He added that the case “does bring in light the imbalance in our judicial system, as it relates to African Americans and people of color.”
Other lawmakers, while not directly blaming race for an unfair trial, showed sympathy for Anthony and openness to reviewing the evidence. Rep. Jonathan Jackson, D-Ill., emphasized the need to “stop this loss and the killing of these young children” and called for the case to be reopened with all evidence presented. Rep. Shomari Figures, D-Ala., described the situation as “unfortunate,” highlighting the loss of one young life and the significant prison sentence for another.
