DOJ Internal Revolt: Emails Reveal Turmoil Over Merrick Garland’s Memo Targeting Parents

Internal revolt and skepticism plagued the Department of Justice following a 2021 memo issued by then-Attorney General Merrick Garland, which aimed to address alleged threats to school boards by dissatisfied parents. Documents obtained by Fox News reveal that high-ranking officials within the DOJ expressed strong objections, predicting significant political headaches for the Biden administration.

The memo was issued in October 2021 as a coordinated response to what the DOJ described as an “increase in harassment, intimidation and threats of violence against school board members, teachers and workers in our nation’s public schools.” This action followed an appeal from the National Association for School Boards (NSBA), which had requested DOJ assistance, suggesting that some parent actions could be classified as “domestic terrorism.”
