The One Word That Ends Almost Every Argument Instantly
What to Do After the Word
De-escalation is not resolution. ‘Understood’ stops the bleeding; it does not close the wound. After using it effectively, the goal is to shift from argument mode to conversation mode.
This means moving from ‘you always’ and ‘you never’ statements to ‘I feel’ and ‘I need’ statements. It means asking questions rather than making accusations. It means being willing to be wrong, or partially wrong, or to acknowledge that the other person has a valid point even if you also have one.
